IELTS Speaking

The IELTS Speaking test is one of the four sections of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. It assesses the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English through a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. The test is designed to evaluate the candidate’s proficiency in spoken English across various situations and topics.

Structure of the IELTS Speaking Test:

The Speaking test consists of three parts and takes approximately 11-14 minutes to complete:

  1. Part 1: Introduction and Interview (4-5 minutes)
  • The examiner introduces themselves and confirms the candidate’s identity.
  • The candidate is asked general questions about familiar topics such as hobbies, studies, work, family, etc.
  • This part aims to assess the candidate’s ability to provide personal information and talk about familiar topics in a conversational manner.
  1. Part 2: Long Turn (3-4 minutes)
  • The candidate receives a task card with a topic and prompts.
  • They have one minute to prepare and make notes on the given topic.
  • The candidate then speaks uninterrupted for up to two minutes on the topic.
  • This part assesses the candidate’s ability to speak at length on a given topic, organize their thoughts, and express ideas coherently.
  1. Part 3: Discussion (4-5 minutes)
  • The examiner asks further questions related to the topic in Part 2.
  • The discussion delves deeper into the candidate’s opinions, ideas, and experiences.
  • The aim is to assess the candidate’s ability to engage in a more complex and abstract discussion, express opinions, and justify their views.
